Interesting and Funny Soccer Facts and Records

On the 4th July 1999, an Argentinian called Martin Palermo set a new record when he missed 3 penalties...in the one match! Argentina ended up losing the match 3-0 so if he had scored all three...

The best penalty shootout that I have heard of was on 28th November, 1996 in the Turkish Cup Quarter Finals. Genclerbirligi and Galatasaray were locked at 1-1 after extra time. The shootout was at 16-16 when Ilyas of Galatasaray missed leaving Osman of Genclerbirligi needing to score to give his team the win. Of course, he scored to win 17-16! I can't imagine how Galatasaray keeper Hayrettin must have felt after conceeding all 17 attempts!

The highest score between two, full-strength international teams occurred in the 1966 Arab Cup played in Iraq. The result was Libya beating Oman 21-0!

Subject: Barbados - Grenada howler
Date: 15 Feb 1994 17:35:55 GMT

I'd like to share with you a little gem I heard on the radio last night. It
concerns a match played last weekend between Barbados and Grenada in some
cup competition. Barbados needed to win the game by two clear goals in order
to progress to the next round. Now the trouble was caused by a daft rule in
the competition which stated that in the event of a game going to penalty
kicks, the winner would be awarded a 2-0 victory. (Yes, I'm sure you can all
see what's coming....)

With 5 minutes to go, Barbados were leading 2-1, and going out of the
tournament. Then, when they realised they were probably not going to score
against Grenada's massed defence, they turned round, and deliberately
scored an own goal, to level the scores. Grenada, themselves not being
stupid, realised what was going on, and then attempted to score an own
goal themselves. However, the Barbados players started defending their
opponents goal to prevent this. In the last five minutes, therefore,
spectators were treated to the incredible sight of a team defending their
opponents goal against attackers desperately trying to score an own goal!

Naturally, the game went to penalties, which Barbados won...

This story is completely true, I assure you. Apparently it was being televised
live, so I hope to see highlights of it soon!

I searched for these results and the only thing that I found was a friendly match in Bridgetown, Barbados on 27th January 1994. The match was drawn 2-2 and Barbados won 3-2 in penalties. I think someone is pretty good at telling stories...

Is this the worst team in the world???

The last round included Meer beating SSA 20-0. SSA Antwerpen averaged conceding
a goal every ten minutes over the entire season!
The 4th provincial league in Antwerpen is the lowest level for "standard"
("first") teams, no relegation takes place.

In the seventies, Chris Nicholl of Aston Villa scored four times! Twice for Villa and twice for opponents Burnley.

Staf Van den Buys scored an amazing own goal hat-trick when he played for Germinal Ekeren in their Belgian Premier League home game against Anderlecht. The result was 2-3, so without his three own goals, Germinal would have won the match!
